Side work is a dart sewn into the week.
In dressmaking, a dart is a fold stitched into the fabric to take in what is left over. It shapes the piece, and it pulls at the cloth around it. Extra work fitted into a full week behaves much the same way.
Dartfold writes about what side work takes in, the hours that surround it, and where it pulls. Not about what it earns.
Back of the envelope
three notes, one for each marking on the piece
| Mark | On the piece | Note |
|---|---|---|
| A | dart · evenings |
What an evening can take in
Research on recovery after work suggests the hours after a shift are not empty space. They do a job of their own, and side work competes with it. |
| B | seam allowance |
Seam allowance: the hours around the hours
Messages, invoices, fees, set-up and the work that runs over. Why estimates of side work tend to come out short, and what the planning research does and does not show. |
| C | dart · pull lines |
Where it pulls: side work and the main job
Studies of people holding more than one job find both strain and spillover in the other direction. A look at what that evidence covers and where it is thin. |
How the pattern is drawn
Every printed pattern carries the same few symbols. These are ours.
-
Grainline: sources first
Every claim about research names the researchers and the study, and says so when the evidence is mixed, small or disputed.
-
Place on fold: no assumptions about the reader
Dartfold writes in general terms. Nothing here presumes anything about the person reading it: their job, their money, their week or their plans.
-
Seam allowance: costs included
Time, fees, paperwork and effort are part of every note. Earnings are not, because they depend on circumstances no publication can see.
-
Dart point: no stories, no promises
There are no testimonials, reader stories, before-and-after accounts or income screenshots on this site, and no claim that any kind of side work leads to any result.
